SailPlotDigital tactics board for sailboat racing

Background

Racing situations such as starts, overlaps, mark roundings and tactical decisions are difficult to explain with words alone. Whiteboards and generic drawing tools work, but they do not include the elements used in sailboat racing and make it hard to store, revise or share a situation digitally.

The open-source desktop project boats provided the original foundation. SailPlot develops that idea into a modern web application that requires no local installation and is immediately available in a browser.

Defined solution

SailPlot provides a dedicated workspace with boats, marks, start and finish lines, wind indicators and other racing elements. Objects can be positioned freely, rotated and combined into complete scenarios. Different boat types and race-course elements support a broad range of training situations.

Scenarios can be exported or shared so that coaches, sailors and teams can prepare sessions, discuss decisions and retain a consistent visual reference. The application architecture also supports configuration, branded variants and future integration with other systems.

Outcome & value

The result is an accessible specialist tool that turns an explanation into a clear visual situation. It works on common devices, removes the need for installation and reduces the time required to prepare training material. Open-source availability keeps the core transparent and reusable, while individual versions provide a consistent branded experience for clubs, coaches and organisations.

Technical implementation

The responsive application is built with React and TypeScript and delivered as a browser-based product. State and drawing logic run on the client. GitHub supports version control and open-source collaboration; Cloudflare provides the public delivery layer. Optional paid variants and individual deployments can be connected to additional services through APIs.
